With featured guest Ron Bennett Founding Dean, University of St. Thomas From Technician to Dean: Some Reflections on Vital Career Lessons

From his start in the industry as a technician to participating in the creation of an engineering program, Ron Bennett has met a lot of characters and had many learning experiences throughout his career journey. He has not always recognized the significance, nor the effect, that these people and situations would have on his life trajectory, both professional and personal. He will share some of those experiences and ‘ah-ha’ moments and offer some reflections on what he now believes are important things to recognize in the pursuit of a successful engineering career.

Bennett began teaching at St. Thomas in 1987 and was active in building the engineering and graduate engineering programs. During his tenure, he began several new degree programs, increased enrollments, introduced and developed the STEPS summer camp for girls and created the School of Engineering. Prior to St. Thomas, Ben-nett worked in the industry for more than 20 years. His responsibilities ranged from R&D, engineering and manufacturing to sales, marketing, and general management. He teaches and publishes in materials engineering, innovation, strategy, technology transfer, leadership, and engineering education. He champions engineering education reform to meet the demands of the 21st Century and leads the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Center for Education.
