From Student Innovation to Strategic Action: A Weekend of Inspiration for MFESTS

This past Saturday, April 11th, 2026 members of the engineering community had the opportunity to experience the SAE Annual Collegiate Vehicle Showcase, held at the Medina AutoMotorPlex as part of the popular Caffeine and Octane public event.

Although it may have flown under the radar for some, the showcase proved to be a standout experience—and one well worth adding to next year’s calendar.

The event featured an impressive range of student-built vehicles organized by SAE International. Attendees had the chance to engage directly with collegiate build teams, exploring everything from rugged, dune buggy-style off-road vehicles to finely tuned Formula-style race cars.

What stood out most wasn’t just the engineering—it was the passion. Conversations with students revealed the depth of hands-on learning, teamwork, and innovation that goes into each build. Even with light rain in the mix, the energy of the event never dipped. While exotic cars like Rolls-Royce and Ferrari models were present, it was the student projects that truly stole the show.

Events like these serve as a powerful reminder of the talent pipeline developing right in our region—and the importance of organizations like MFESTS in helping connect students, professionals, and societies.

Looking Ahead: MFESTS Q2 Planning and Priorities

As we carry that momentum forward, MFESTS members are encouraged to participate in upcoming Q2 planning efforts.

A Q2 Planning Meeting will be held this Thursday from 6:00–7:30 PM via Zoom, followed by the full MFESTS Q2 Meeting on Tuesday, April 28 from 6:00–7:30 PM. The April 28 meeting will take place in person at the Ridgedale Public Library (Room 172), with a virtual option available.

The goal for Q2 is clear:
Identify 2–3 high-impact action items and build momentum toward meaningful outcomes before the Q3 meeting in July.

Several promising initiatives have already emerged from prior discussions:

  • Expanding Society Outreach: A comprehensive database of engineering and scientific societies, compiled by Dan, is laying the groundwork for stronger communication and collaboration. Tools like Airtable are being explored to support these efforts.
  • Launching a Mentorship Framework: Venkat has introduced guiding principles for a mentorship program, with the vision of connecting experienced professionals from member societies with those seeking guidance.
  • Strengthening Student Engagement: Roquesan and Jason have emphasized the importance of building relationships with local colleges and universities—particularly as students begin the new academic year this fall.
  • Growing Awareness of MFESTS: Efforts are underway to connect with organizations that may not yet be familiar with MFESTS, opening the door to new partnerships and shared opportunities.
  • Exploring Funding Opportunities: Identifying grants and funding sources to support society initiatives and student research remains a key area of interest.

A Call to Participate

Whether you’re able to attend the planning meeting or not, your voice matters. Members are strongly encouraged to join the April 28 Q2 meeting or share ideas via email.

MFESTS continues to evolve, and its success as an “umbrella organization” depends on one core principle:
delivering real, meaningful value to its member societies.

Let’s build on the inspiration from this past weekend and turn it into action that strengthens our entire engineering community.
